Basketball Rules 2016-17

San Gabriel Valley Christian Sports League Basketball Rules

(Revised 2016))

ALL CIF RULES ARE FOLLOWED, WITH THE FOLLOWING EXCEPTIONS:

COURT SIZE

1. Ideal court size is 50x84 feet. Plenty of room in the rulebook for varying sizes, including obstructions close to ends or sidelines. League will evaluate for safety.

ALTERNATING POSSESSION

1. Games are always started with a jump ball.

2. All other jump ball situations including the start of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters, will begin with a throw-in from out–of-bounds.

3. Each overtime starts with a jump ball.

FOULS AND PENALTIES

1. One coach is allowed to stand within a limited area near his/her seat approximately 6-feet long and away from the out-of-bounds line.

2. Referees have the right to restrict a coach to his/her seat if the coach gets unruly.

3. A player occupying a marked lane space may enter the lane on the release of the ball by the free throw shooter.

4. Two free throws, and ball out of bounds for each intentional foul.

5. Bonus free throws, one-and-one, begin after a team’s sixth personal foul during the half. Players shoot the bonus on the seventh foul. Double bonuses, two free throws, begin on the 10th foul.

6. Any coach or player who gets two technical fouls will be ejected from the game.

7. No 10-second limit in the backcourt for the girls.

TIMING REGULATIONS (Gold Division only)

1. 7 minute stop clock quarters.

2. Overtime is 3 minutes in length.

3. Half time is 5 minutes in length.

4. Each team is allowed four time outs per game. Timeouts may be taken at any time.

5. Shot clock – 35 seconds for boys, 30 seconds for girls. If a school has a shot clock, they may utilize it.

TIMING REGULATIONS (Blue Division

1. 10. minute running quarters.

2. Overtime is 3 minutes in length.

3. Half time is 5 minutes in length.

4. Each team is allowed four time outs per game. Timeouts may be taken at any time.

BASKETBALL SIZE

1. Boy’s is regulation size – 29.5.

2. Girl’s is high school regulation size – 28.5.

SCORING

  1. ALL HOST COURTS MUST HAVE THE 3-POINT LINE OR THAT COURT CANNOT BE USED IN THE SGVCSL.

FAN/COACH/PLAYER BEHAVIOR

Fan behavior, coach behavior and player behavior will be monitored by the referees. If any of these gets out of control the referees may respond with the following directives:

1. The coach will be warned about the behavior of the said parent/fan, coach, or player.

2. The referee will assess a penalty of a technical foul (two shots plus possession of the ball to the other tem)

3. The referee may call the game and announce a forfeit loss against the offending team.

4. No noise during free throw shooting in the interest of sportsmanship.
